Resonance - Joey Pero
Resonance is the debut album by former Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau trumpeter Joey Pero, and it's the most creative trumpet CD I've heard in quite some time. Although traditional in parts, what is most striking about the music of Resonance is that is has one foot firmly planted in the music of today. The influences are varied, making it difficult to pin down a specific genre. While primarily a jazz album, I could hear colors of hip hop, rock, pop, classical, and even a little flavor of drum corps (particularly in "Blue Rondo"). The arrangements are inventive and the production is lush and rich. Joey's playing is both technically impressive as well as artistic and expressive. This is my favorite trumpet CD of the last year. I can't get enough of it.
